At age four, I knew I wanted to be an author. I love to play with the English language, to create pictures with words. At age eight, I met a Deaf couple, the parents of my parents’ friends, and discovered another language that created images, this time on the hands. In college, my senior thesis asked: “What does a writer of fiction need to know about a culture they are not native to in order to write believable, authentic fiction?” Immersing myself in the Deaf community led me to my now twenty-plus year career as a sign language interpreter. I couldn’t be more grateful to the Deaf people who I’ve worked with on my journey and made me the interpreter I am today. I have specialized in theatrical interpreting since I started. My goal has always been to give Deaf audiences the same emotional experience a hearing audience gets from the stage. Now, with Handwriter Ink, my goal is for Deaf readers and writers to have equal access to the literary world.
